L Dunn ©2019 Verse He wakes to the early morning train's bellow and moan Rumbling through the flats over cross-tied rails Rubs the sleep from his eyes, gets up and ready To pound a day's worth of 16 penny nails Chorus His calloused hands, steady and strong Are work hardened, weathered, and rough Those calloused hands, his family depends on Provide for the ones he loves Those calloused hands Verse He heads out the door without fail, come rain or shine Before dawn breaks across the eastern skyline Turns the sweat of his brow into daily bread The hand that swings the hammer keeps his family fed Chorus Bridge Some have never known want Their luck's a given A life of plenty fills their gilded cup While there's some that hold A glass half full of hope That work is salvation It will provide And fill the other half up Chorus His calloused hands, steady and strong Are work hardened, weathered, and rough Those calloused hands, his family depends on Provide for the ones he loves Those calloused hands Those calloused hands

L Dunn © 2019 Intro And with a smile he said... Verse ‘Would you like to dance?’ She replied, ‘I was hoping you would ask’ And turning in a little closer she told him ‘I’m glad you didn’t let this chance pass’ He took her hand He didn’t rush They made it last Chorus Till closing time Till the final chord was rung Till closing time Till the last refrain was sung In the arms of a love song They led each other on Till closing time Verse Her raven curls tumbled down He leaned to breathe her in As they stepped onto the dance floor She folded into him He drew his arms Around her waist Pulled her close again Chorus Bridge Into the rhythm of a star crossed night Playing a lover’s game Perfect strangers drawn into the heat Of a slow burning flame Musical Interlude Chorus

L Dunn © 2019 Verse Like a high pop fly lost in the sun If not blinded by the light he'd 've had that one An opportunity missed he's come to regret In a high stakes game More often than not There's only one chance that you get Chorus There was a time he could've had it all But from vanity's hand fortune can fall He missed his calling now he'll never know Cause that ship sailed long ago That ship sailed long ago Verse He was a natural as far as talent goes But it takes more than talent, lord only knows What virtue is pride that refuses to bend Lady luck's impatient She did not wait As pride got the best of him Chorus Solo Bridge To hear him tell it, it was plain as day He spoke from his heart, had this to say He knew all too well, you can't bring back The one that got away Chorus Tag He missed his calling now he'll never know... Cause that ship sailed long ago That ship sailed long ago

All Fired Up 03:22
L Dunn © 2019 Verse Hey, momma said son you'd better beware Or you'll end up livin' on a wing and a prayer Put down that guitar and mind the store Or you'll be knockin' at the poor house door Now momma don't you worry, momma don't you fret You've raised him right, you've done your best Some are born to wander, while others stay home Momma you've raised a rollin' stone Chorus As sure as the green grass grows As the mighty Mississippi rolls He's got the rhythm, born with the soul Hell bent, rarin' to go All fired up on that rock 'n' roll Verse He cut his teeth on 'Johnny B. Goode' 'Mystery Train', 'Crossroads', and 'Knock on Wood' Word got around he had 'em down cold Built a reputation note by note Soon came a day he bought an old Cadillac Left town and didn't look back Rollin' on three black retreads and a whitewall tire Hell bound to set the world on fire Chorus Bridge California calling Across the great divide Said his farewells Headed west 2,000 miles to ride Verse He really took to those honkytonk nights Playin' packed houses, he was doin' alright Pushin' the limit, Devil may care Rock 'n' roll bound to get somewhere Chorus
5.
L Dunn © 2019 Verse Was it a taste of the forbidden or the heat of the night That led them down to the riverside Will power fell away, flesh grew weak Of the consequence they did not speak Outlines in the moon glow of a secret kept Pulsed in shadowed silhouette Desire unveiled, lifted away Sweetened like honey in the roll and sway Chorus At nightfall where the river bends They shed convention like a saint sheds sin Fever washed over them At nightfall down Where the river bends Verse She married young, too young to settle down He was there on business, new to town And as the summer heat would rise A born persuader wooed a shotgun bride Temptation's at it's best at night Wrong is only wrong if it comes to light And as an August moon turned a blind eye They'd steal away to the riverside Chorus At nightfall where the river bends They shed convention like a saint sheds sin Fever washed over them At nightfall down... Bridge When the sun sets, at day's end Shadows fall where the river bends Down along the bank where the night grows wild Where the cottonwoods rustle as the river rolls by Restless hearts will stray Ties that bind are bound to give way Ending In the slow easy burn of a warm summer night Never been two wrongs ever been so right Chorus

Rising Road 03:04
L Dunn © 2019 Verse When you've lost the reason why As hope disappears into an empty sky When a cold, hard world comes a calling Lean on me, I'll catch you if you're falling Chorus Love is a rising road It's a choice that we make Though sorrow takes a toll On every living soul It's love that carries the day Love will carry the day Verse In time every storm will pass Tears of sadness will not last Together we'll see this through You can count on me, I'll be there for you Chorus Verse The dream I had while we slept Still hasn't burned off yet We were walkin' a cold, dark winter mile When a warm mornin' sun rose in your smile Chorus Love is a rising road It's a choice that we make Though sorrow takes a toll On every living soul It's love that carries the day Though sorrow takes a toll On every living soul It's love that carries the day Love will carry the day Ending Love is a rising road Love is a rising road

L Dunn © 2019 Verse In the dawn of a future foretold Winds of change will blow cold As empires crumble, then fall like dominoes I can feel trouble brewin', smell it on the wind I know it's nature, it's like next of kin No 'ifs' about it, it's only a matter of when Chorus As the oceans heave and the tempest roars Pray to God but keep on rowin' to shore He'll take the helm but you must handle the oars No more kickin' that stone Further down the road Kickin' that stone down yonder's road Verse Choose to believe or choose to ignore Truth that can't be denied anymore A reckonings coming, like none have witnessed before Chorus Bridge Let today make a promise That tomorrow keeps Respect and protect our Mother Earth While salvation is still within our reach Chorus As the oceans heave and the tempest roars Pray to God but keep on rowin' to shore He'll take the helm but you must handle the oars Through the rising seas of apocalyptic storms That only a ship of fools can ignore No more kickin' that stone No longer kickin' that stone No more kickin' that stone Further down the road Kickin' that stone down yonder's road Yonder's road Yonder's road
8.
L Dunn © 2019 Verse A pretty girl I'll see Will remind me of you Might be the color of her hair or the way she walks Think only of you It never ends though we did part There'll always be a place for you in my heart Chorus You were everything All I ever wanted All I'll ever need You meant everything to me Verse When I see two lovers strollin' hand in hand It reminds me of being with you So complete and happy together That once upon a time with you I know as the days unwind You'll never be far from my mind Chorus Bridge 1 I'll always wonder what would have been If we still had what we had then When I was yours and you were mine But there's no going back in time It's gone Still I'm holdin' on To yesterday Holdin' on to yesterday Verse When I'm in the arms of someone new I close my eyes and I see you More and more as the days go by... Bridge 2 It comes as no surprise Cause in my heart I realize It's hard letting go Of a once in a lifetime Chorus You were everything All I ever wanted All I'll ever need You meant everything My once upon a life time fling You meant everything to me Vamp
9.
L Dunn © 2019 Verse I’ve been at a crossroads Where blood, sweat, and tears meet Rolled up my sleeves, salvaged dreams That collided with the street I found little room to entertain Suspension of disbelief Chorus In the friction and heat In the friction and heat Verse I’ve seen teflon smiles Front confidence schemes A dealer and his shill, fleece a mark Who wagers he can follow the queen And the art lies in the sleight of hand Quicker than the eye can see Chorus Bridge Shifting through the gears Steering clear of crossed bare wires On myside of the line, inbounds Out of the line of fire Verse I’ve heard slander pass as judgement Roll off tongues in double speak A Judas kiss fall from tender lips For thirty pieces of deceit And as I’m whistling passed the graveyard Smoke’s curling up around me feet Chorus Verse I’ve been at a crossroads Where blood, sweat, and tears meet Rolled up my sleeves, salvaged dreams That collided with the street… Chorus outro In the friction and heat Friction and heat Friction and heat Out in the friction and heat

Novella 03:38
instrumental

about

The musicians on this, my 7th album, are all great Sf. Bay Area players and thanks to their artistry and musicianship, the songs on Jukebox Novella have been fully realized. Also, credit goes to Jermaine Hamilton's work as tracking/mix engineer and co-conspirator (full credits listed below).

Over the years, I've been influenced by a lot of great music from a number of different styles, so it's no surprise that the songs I've written for this album reflect that. There's cross-pollinating going on and a mix of genres in this release, borrowing primarily from the ageless American roots music tradition. As a songwriter, I've never fit neatly into any particular bag, I prefer to stretch as far as my abilities will take me, using the same 12 notes all western musicians get to choose from. I like my music on the organic side so if you're looking for a sampled, computer generated, synthetic, music collage, you'll not find it here. For me, a song has to sound good with just acoustic guitar and voice before recording and embellishing. My hope is that these songs ring true, will stand the test of time, and that you'll enjoy this album as much as I've enjoyed making it.
