about

A closely guarded secret, now who hasn't got one? The couple in this song shall remain anonymous but the memory not forgotten. Songwriters or any creative writers, for that matter, love 'rivers' and I'm no exception. There's something about a river that accepts all comers: love, destruction, nostalgia, renewal, birth, despair, hope, cleansing, and in this song...the power of temptation. Many of the lyric lines in this song came from my 'lyric stash' of keepers that are written down on scraps of paper lying all over my desk, waiting to be called into the game. I also have to thank the talented musicians who recorded this song for their contributions in arrangement and execution, the extra measure that makes the difference.

Verse
Was it a taste of the forbidden or the heat of the night
That led them down to the riverside
Will power fell away, flesh grew weak
Of the consequence they did not speak

Outlines in the moon glow of a secret kept
Pulsed in shadowed silhouette
Desire unveiled, lifted away
Sweetened like honey in the roll and sway

Chorus
At nightfall where the river bends
They shed convention like a saint sheds sin
Fever washed over them
At nightfall down
Where the river bends

Verse
She married young, too young to settle down
He was there on business, new to town
And as the summer heat would rise
A born persuader wooed a shotgun bride

Temptation's at it's best at night
Wrong is only wrong if it comes to light
And as an August moon turned a blind eye
They'd steal away to the riverside

Chorus
At nightfall where the river bends
They shed convention like a saint sheds sin
Fever washed over them
At nightfall down...

Bridge
When the sun sets, at day's end
Shadows fall where the river bends
Down along the bank where the night grows wild
Where the cottonwoods rustle as the river rolls by
Restless hearts will stray
Ties that bind are bound to give way

Ending
In the slow easy burn of a warm summer night
Never been two wrongs ever been so right

Chorus
